  1. Hi, my son lives in Tychy, Poland so options for destination would either be Katowice or Kraków. We live in Northern Ireland but can get across to Newcastle in England easy enough to pick up a ship to Amsterdam. Which trains do you recommend from Amsterdam. We are both over 60yrs.

  2. Can anyone give me advice on a train trip I want to plan for me and my husband and two children (5 and 7 years old). We want to travel from the Netherlands to the north of Spain (around Figueres). We only have one week for the whole trip (back and forth), so will not likely hang around in France. I have been interrailing 20 years ago, but then had plenty of time and no children around 🙂
I’ve lost the train-touch a bit, so here a few questions; Is an interrail ticket the easiest for this ‘simple return’ trip? Are night trains a good option between Spain and Paris? Are reservations necessary for all the trains? I also saw a blog on this site on the yellow train in the Pyrenees….hmmmmm. Any comment or help is appreciated! Best (train?) greetings, Janneke

    • Hi Janneke!
Since you are going for one week only (return trip) the best option probably would be to get regular tickets instead of an Interrail pass. But it makes sense to compare prices.
With Interrail, you would have to take the “5 in 15” pass (5 travel days within a period of 15 days), from which you would probably need only two or three travel days. Your children would be free (make sure to buy the “family” pass) but you would need extra reservations.
With regular tickets, reservations are already included but prices can be more expensive depending on how much in advance you book and when you want to travel.
In any way, I would recommend to travel quickly to Paris by Thalys high speed train (check out the article here on the blog). From Paris you could take the night train to the French/Spanish border, either to Latour de Carol (starting point of Yellow Train) or to Cerbere/Portbou on the coast. From Latour there is a regional train to Barcelona; from Portbou, the regional trains run to Figueres, then on to Barcelona.
A pretty nice option would be to take the night train to Latour de Carol, then travel by Yellow Train to Villefranche and on to Perpignan. The following day you can go via Portbou to Figueres.
For the way back you could again take the night train to Paris or travel during the day by TGV.
